Paul Spencer, Democratic candidate for Arkansas’s Second Congressional District, released the following statement after Representative French Hill and 68 other GOP House members voted against vital aid for Puerto Rico and other areas.
Candidate Spencer provided the following statement:
Thursday’s vote on increased funding for areas affected by extreme weather was sadly met with rejection by numerous Republican representatives, including our current representative, Mr. French Hill.
More than half of Puerto Rico residents lack clean water. Violent wildfires continue to engulf California with no rain forecasted. Thousands along the Gulf Shore await the assistance of the National Flood Insurance Program.
These Americans are asking for assistance, and our representatives decided to make a political statement rather than immediately acting to send aid. Many of them, including Representative Hill, approved funding for Texas and Louisiana amid the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. At the time of that vote, Represenative Hill stated that “America is strongest when neighbor supports neighbor.”
I want to call on Representative Hill to live up to his own words and to ensure that no American is more equal than any other just because of where they live or who they voted for. If Representative Hill and other Republicans continue to refuse to assist Americans in their time of need, it is time that we as citizens recognize that we are not receiving the representation we deserve.
